Bond is back in style, thanks to David Arnold. On Tomorrow Never Dies, Arnold paid homage to the classic John Barry era; on The World Is Not Enough he leaves Barry's legacy behind to build a new and distinctive sound all his own. The marvel is, it's still recognisably, undeniably, thrillingly Bond. The series producers knew they'd made a mistake last time around by selecting Sheryl Crow's limp "Tomorrow Never Dies" song as the opener (Arnold's own, superior take on it, "Surrender", was apologetically included over the end credits), so this time they've made good with "The World Is Not Enough", once again penned by Arnold and veteran Bond lyricist Don Black (who wrote the words for "Thunderball" among others). Garbage help out all they can, but it's unmistakably Arnold's song, a bold, swaggering piece in the best tradition of the series. Shirley Manson is no Shirley Bassey, although her husky vocals have a sexy allure all their own. The score itself is a roller-coaster ride around all the larger-than-life ingredients of great Bond music--sassy, devil-may-care brass, swooning, sultry strings--updated with electronics and samples to produce a "Bond with beats" sound that's utterly contemporary, yet still classically Bond. There's plenty of diversity among the action set-pieces, too, with the romantic "Elektra's Theme", a little lounge ("Casino", naturally), and even another song "Only Myself to Blame" (sung in true crooner fashion by Scott Walker no less) making for an album that's overflowing with good reasons to acquire it. David Arnold, it seems, was born to play Bond. --Mark Walker Amazon.co.uk Review.
