Many trumpet players sing, but as a vocal stylist Chet Baker was unique amongst them. His light, almost girlish voice was the antithesis of Louis Armstrong's throatiness, and yet it had an appeal of its own. These 20 tracks date from 1953 to 1956 and are probably the best vocals he ever recorded. For one thing, there is plenty of sensitive trumpet playing in between the vocals and also some over- dubbed trumpet obbligatos. And for another, the choice of tunes is excellent. Unlike many jazz singers Baker stays close to the melodies as written, reserving his improvising for the trumpet passages. Because of the highly individual piano playing of Russ Freeman, the rhythm section makes a huge contribution on all tracks. These tracks were made soon after Baker had made an impact on the jazz world with the Gerry Mulligan Quartet and over the years these vocals have achieved cult status. Some tracks have sometimes suffered severe editing in various reissues where the instrumental work of Bill Perkins, Jimmy Giuffre and Joe Pass was substituted for the vocals. This release presents the original performances as they were intended to be heard. --Steve Voce Amazon.co.uk Review.
