This exceptional compilation (mostly sung in German) covers the two most important stages of the enigmatic Dietrich's long career. Opening with the effortless, exotic "Falling In Love Again", it first takes in the period 1930-31 when Dietrich made her name as femme fatale Lola in Von Sternberg's The Blue Angel and was then transformed by that director into a Hollywood icon. These are simple period pieces--sweet orchestrations with Dietrich at her frosty, imperious best. The bulk of the material, though, is from the early Sixties by which time, aided by Burt Bacharach, she'd put together a cabaret show--a 25 year hit--based on nostalgia and her own enduring charisma. Thus we have melodramatic, sometimes jaunty but always effective versions of her wartime smash "Lili Marlene" and contemporary ballads like "Blowin' In The Wind" and "Where Have All The Flowers Gone?" A seemly testament to an undeniable legend. --Dominic Wills Amazon.co.uk Review.
